Dryer Taking Two Cycles to Dry? Possible Causes and What to Check

A restricted vent is one possible cause of slow drying, but not the only one. Here is what to check first.

By Vortex Airworks · Published 2026-10-12

Several problems can make a dryer take two cycles: a restricted vent, a clogged lint filter, overloaded drums, the wrong settings, unusually wet loads, or a fault in the dryer itself. Check the simple things first, then have the vent inspected if the problem continues.

Quick checks you can do today

  • Clean the lint filter before or after every load.
  • Avoid overloading; follow your dryer's load-size guidance.
  • Confirm the cycle and heat settings.
  • Unusually wet loads may indicate a washer spin or load-balance issue that increases drying time.
  • Go outside while the dryer runs and check whether the exterior flap opens.

What the guidance covers

CPSC advises cleaning the lint filter before or after every load and checking that the outdoor exhaust flap opens while the dryer runs. ENERGY STAR advises against overloading the dryer.

What exterior airflow can and cannot tell you

Weak airflow at the outside hood can suggest a restriction, but it does not diagnose one by itself. Strong airflow outside also does not rule out a vent problem; buildup, damaged sections, or a poor connection behind the dryer can still affect performance.

Other signs worth checking

Clothes that are very hot at the end of a cycle, a laundry room that gets unusually warm, or lint collecting around the exterior hood are reasons to have the vent looked at.

If you smell burning

A burning smell is not a routine maintenance sign. Stop using the dryer and have the cause assessed before you use it again. If there is smoke or you suspect a fire, leave the home and call 911.

When the dryer itself may be the problem

If the drum never warms up, or the vent checks out and drying is still slow, the cause may be a heating element, thermostat, or sensor. That is a job for an appliance technician.

What we do

We clean the vent, inspect accessible portions with a camera, take airflow readings before and after cleaning, and explain what we found. We do not promise a specific drying time, because the dryer and the loads matter too.
